What is the Australian Income Tax Calculator?

Australian income tax uses a progressive (slab) system — you pay 0% on the first $18,200, then rising rates up to 45% on income above $180,000. The 2% Medicare levy is added on top. Most workers have this deducted via PAYG withholding. Low-income tax offset (LITO) can reduce the effective rate for lower earners.

Formula

Tax is calculated on each income band separately. Medicare Levy = Income × 2%. Total Tax = Income Tax + Medicare Levy.
T
= Total tax payable
I
= Taxable income
LB_i
= Lower bound of slab i
UB_i
= Upper bound of slab i
r_i

Frequently asked questions

What are the Australian income tax brackets for 2025-26?

$0–$18,200: 0%; $18,201–$45,000: 19%; $45,001–$120,000: 32.5%; $120,001–$180,000: 37%; $180,001+: 45%. Plus 2% Medicare levy on top.

How is the Medicare levy calculated?

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. A reduction applies for singles earning under $26,000 (2025-26 threshold) and for families on low incomes.

What is the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) for 2025-26?

LITO provides up to $700 tax reduction for incomes up to $37,500, phasing out to zero at $66,667. This calculator shows gross tax — subtract LITO for your net payable.

Do I pay Medicare levy if I have private health insurance?

Private health insurance does not reduce the Medicare levy — it reduces the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS), which is an additional charge on higher earners without adequate private hospital cover.
