PGBL is recommended for those who file the complete IRPF declaration (modelo completo) and earn above the taxable threshold. VGBL is better for those using the simplified deduction or who have already contributed 12%. Both types face IRPF on withdrawal via progressive or regressive table.

What is the Brazil PGBL / VGBL Retirement Calculator?

Brazil's private pension system offers two main products: PGBL (Plano Gerador de Benefício Livre) and VGBL (Vida Gerador de Benefício Livre). PGBL contributions up to 12% of gross income are deductible from IRPF, making them ideal for complete-return filers. VGBL contributions are not deductible but only the gains (not principal) are taxed on withdrawal. Both can use progressive or regressive IR tables at redemption.

Formula

Balance = Monthly × ((1+r)^n − 1) ÷ r × (1+r). PGBL saving = min(Annual, 12% income) × Marginal IRPF rate.
FV
= Projected balance
C
= Monthly contribution
r
= Monthly return rate
n

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PGBL and VGBL in Brazil?

PGBL: contributions up to 12% of gross income are deductible from IRPF annually. On withdrawal, the full amount (principal + gains) is taxed. VGBL: no annual deduction. On withdrawal, only gains are taxed. VGBL is better for simplified filers; PGBL for complete filers with high income.

What tax tables apply to private pension withdrawal in Brazil?

You choose at enrollment: progressive table (same as regular income tax, 0-27.5%) or regressive table (starting at 35% for under 2 years, falling to 10% for 10+ years). Regressive is typically better for long-term investors.

Can I contribute more than 12% of income to PGBL?

Yes, but contributions above 12% are not deductible. Many advisors recommend contributing exactly 12% to PGBL (for the deduction) and any additional retirement savings to VGBL.
