€1,000 Sparerpauschbetrag (saver's lump sum) per person (€2,000 for married couples). Capital gains tax is withheld at source by banks (Abgeltungsteuer). Soli applies at 5.5%.

What is the Kapitalertragsteuer-Rechner?

Germany's Abgeltungsteuer is a flat 25% withholding tax on investment income, applied after a €1,000 Sparerpauschbetrag (saver's lump sum) exemption per person. Solidarity surcharge (5.5%) is added on top. Banks withhold the tax automatically unless you submit a Freistellungsauftrag to claim the exemption.

Formula

Taxable gains = Capital gains − €1,000. Tax = Taxable × 25% + 5.5% Soli.
1000
= Sparerpauschbetrag (annual exemption)
G
= Total capital gains

Frequently asked questions

What is the Sparerpauschbetrag in 2025?

€1,000 per person (€2,000 for jointly assessed married couples). Submit a Freistellungsauftrag to your bank to have this applied automatically.

Do I need to declare capital gains on my tax return?

Usually not — banks withhold Abgeltungsteuer at source. However, you should declare if your marginal income tax rate is below 25%, as you can apply for the cheaper rate (Günstigerprüfung).
