State subsidy: €175 base + €300 per child (born after 2008). Maximum total contribution for full subsidy is €2,100/year. Pension projection assumes level annual payments and constant return. Does not model mortality tables or annuity rates.

What is the Riester-Renten-Rechner?

The Riester-Rente is a German state-subsidised private pension scheme. To receive the full annual subsidy (Grundzulage €175 + Kinderzulage €300 per child), you must contribute at least 4% of your previous year's gross income — up to a maximum of €2,100. Contributions and subsidies grow tax-deferred; withdrawals in retirement are taxed as income.

Formula

Own contribution = max(€60, min(4% × gross income − subsidy, €2,100 − subsidy)). State subsidy = €175 + €300 × children. Projected balance = total annual payment × ((1+r)^n − 1) ÷ r × (1+r).

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Riester subsidy in 2025?

The base subsidy (Grundzulage) is €175/year. Each eligible child born after 2008 adds €300/year. To receive the full subsidy, you must contribute at least 4% of your prior-year gross income minus the subsidy.

Is the Riester-Rente still worth it in 2025?

Riester is most beneficial for families with children (high subsidies) and employees with high marginal tax rates who can deduct contributions up to €2,100. Low earners with children benefit most from the guaranteed subsidy.

Can I cancel my Riester contract?

Yes, but you must repay all received subsidies and tax deductions. Alternatively, you can reduce contributions to the minimum €60/year to keep the contract dormant.
